Mukisa Semuju is a 10-year-old boy whose life has been filled with challenges far beyond his age. He comes from a very poor family where every day is a struggle to secure basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. Accessing education has become one of the biggest obstacles in his young life. Many mornings he wakes up eager to go to school, but without school fees, books, or a uniform, he is often left behind while other children continue with their lessons.
At home, poverty and disease are constant realities. When someone falls sick, there is rarely money for medicine or hospital visits. Hunger sometimes replaces meals, and worry replaces laughter. Yet, in the middle of all these hardships, Mukisa carries a powerful dream in his heart — he wants to become a social worker when he grows up. He hopes to help vulnerable children and families in his community so that no one else has to experience the pain he lives with today. He believes that if he is educated, he can become a voice for the poor and a helper to those who feel forgotten.
However, if Mukisa is not helped at this critical stage of his life, his future could take a very difficult path. Without support, he may be forced to drop out of school completely, limiting his chances of gaining skills or employment in the future. He risks growing up trapped in the same cycle of poverty, poor health, and hopelessness that surrounds him now. His dream of becoming a social worker — a dream filled with compassion and purpose — could slowly disappear, not because he lacks determination, but because he lacks opportunity.
Mukisa’s story is one of both struggle and hope. With support for education, healthcare, and basic needs, he has the potential to rise above his circumstances and become a positive force in his community. Without that help, a bright and caring young boy may never get the chance to turn his dream into reality, and the community may lose a future leader who once only needed a small hand to lift him up.
